On Monday, tens of thousands of people staged a powerful protest in Milwaukee against Sheriff David Clarke’s effort to enlist every cop under him into deputized federal agents with the ability to detain and deport immigrants. This Thursday, February 16, calls for “A Day Without Immigrants” are spreading across the country. The website Fusion reported that the action will be a “national strike by immigrants … the latest in a growing movement to highlight the role immigrants play in the face of Donald Trump’s increasingly harsh crackdown.” Jose Andres, a prominent chef in Washington D.C. who refused to open a restaurant in a Trump hotel after candidate Trump began attacking Mexican people, said he was closing all his restaurants. Many others are following suit, in D.C. and elsewhere.
