A recent New York Times opinion piece by David Brody illuminates the dangerous alliance between right-wing evangelicals and Donald Trump, who hardly embodies the traditional “family values” morality of the Christian right. Brody, himself an evangelical author and mouthpiece for the Christian Broadcasting Network, describes this surprising partnership as a “match made in Heaven,” because “Mr. Trump and evangelicals share a disdain for political correctness, a world seen through absolutes and a desire to see an America that embraces Judeo-Christian values again rather than rejecting them.”
Brody explains the radical evangelicals’ embrace of Trump, writing “This president’s effect on our cultural norms has been shocking. His critics would call it appalling; evangelicals say it’s immensely satisfying: They’ve seen a culture deteriorate quickly in the past decade, and they’re looking for a bold culture warrior to fight for them.” Without irony, Brody is presenting the reality that evangelicals want a Christian theocracy and want to replace the prevailing cultural norms, which has embraced more progressive values since the civil rights era, with theirs. He explains “The goal of evangelicals has always been winning the larger battle over control of the culture, not to get mired in the moral failings of each and every candidate.”
When an evangelical theocrat like David Brody say Trump is their president and is accomplishing a great deal for their movement, we need to take it seriously. This isn’t just a matter of Trump playing to a part of his base. It’s a united front of white supremacists and Christian Fascists determined to destroy the separation of church and state, eviscerate women’s and LGBT rights, undo the progress of the civil rights movement, and remake society and government in service of Christian fascism draped in the American flag. To those who say that Trump is losing or is ineffectual, listen to Brody himself, proudly contradicting that perception. He says, “Why in the world wouldn’t evangelicals get behind and support a man who not only is in line with most of their agenda but also has delivered time and time again? The victories are numerous: the courts, pro-life policies, the coming Embassy in Jerusalem and religious liberty issues, just to name a few. He easily wins the unofficial label of “most evangelical-friendly United States president ever.”
Straight from the evangelical horse’s mouth, Trump is accomplishing more for them than any other President. It is entirely unacceptable for us to stand by as they win victory after victory, with all that would mean for people in this country and around the world. Everyone who does not want to live in a white supremacist, evangelical theocracy must take to the streets to drive out this whole fascist regime. They ALL must go!
