What you do – what we do – over these next few months will be decisive for the future of generations to come.
For nearly three years, a fascist regime has ruled America. They have put concentration camps on the border, they have demonized and attacked people who are not white and fomented a white supremacist movement, they have torn up the environment, they have threatened war and recklessly brandished nuclear weapons, and they have tried to drive women and LGBTQ people back to the dark ages, in the name of “religious freedom”(!). They make a mockery of the very notion of truth, they are foreclosing the right to dissent, and they trample over the rule of law. They have been relentless — and they aim for a full clampdown.
Now, suddenly, after what Democrats say was a “breach in national security,” impeachment hearings have begun – after months of stalling. This could be a real opening to drive out the regime – IF we understand some key things.
First, that Trump and Pence will not give up and neither will the millions who support the fascist program. The fascists have their people in the courts and even if the courts should rule against them, they may well defy the courts. And if Trump IS able to stay, he will almost certainly not only take revenge but try to make a further huge leap toward all-out fascism.
Second, that the Democrats want to limit the inquiry to Trump’s actions endangering national security in his attempt to win the 2020 election, without touching on his far deeper crimes. That is, the top Democrats are NOT, at this point, going after the whole range of fascist atrocities we outlined above. They want to remove Trump without going after the whole regime and without calling out the fascism at its core; this would leave the cancer in place to grow even more dangerously.
Third, the only thing that can really get rid of this regime will be mass outpourings in the streets, nonviolent and week after week, growing in numbers and determination, making clear that WE REFUSE TO ACCEPT A FASCIST AMERICA: We demand the TRUMP/PENCE REGIME MUST GO NOW! These have been done all over the world, from Algeria to Puerto Rico to Hong Kong, and there is no reason we cannot learn from those struggles. If these take root and grow, then the impeachment process can play a role; but if we sit passively, waiting for this to solve the problem, we may well end up in an even worse spot than we are in today.
On October 19, this begins in New York and Los Angeles. October 26, mass sustained protest with the demand Trump/Pence Regime Must Go – NOW! spreads everywhere.
We cannot stand aside as spectators. We must seize on the crisis now erupting, taking history into our own hands and turning dread for the future into a force for hope!
