Here’s one way we can transform our selves and our country during this pandemic: Let’s get rid of Trump and Pence by peaceful but sustained and massive protests. I have a vision of folks in neighborhood after neighborhood going up to their roofs or out on their fire escapes to yell their displeasure with this fascist regime in any creative or non-creative way they can. I go up on my roof every evening at seven when people express their appreciation of the essential workers and rant against the fascists and bang out little rhythms on any metal surface I can find.
I wish others would agree with me that it would be much more meaningful if they drove these monsters out themselves. If we could do so by voting, it would be much more comfortable and genteel but I don’t feel voting will be successful. Trump was caught red-handed trying to interfere with the election using a foreign power to help him. When the Dems tried to impeach him, his fascist cronies exonerated him. They even said he has the power to do whatever he wants “as long as he felt it was for the good of the country.”
Which of his policies have been for the good of our country? His environmental policies, his demand that we reopen public places during a pandemic, his treatment of emigrants and their children at our southern border, his threat to take Social Security and Medicare away from the elderly, his misogyny, his racist dog whistling, his vindictive firing of politicians that call out his ignoring of the truth and shredding of the laws? None of these policies have been for the good of anyone but Donald Trump and his fascist buddies.
I really believe that if we protested day after day, we’d scare the pants off Trump and Co., not to mention the more human Republicans and the less craven Democrats. No government, even fascist ones, want to deal with mass disorder. And anyway, regardless of our success, we wouldn’t go down without a fight.
