January 25: Trump tweeted that “if Chicago doesn’t fix the horrible ‘carnage’ going on, 228 shootings in 2017 with 42 killings (up 24% from 2016), I will send in the Feds!” Many in Chicago have already speculated (including the Chicago Chief of Police) that Trump means to deploy the National Guard onto the streets, particularly the majority Black neighborhoods in this extremely segregated city. This is a threat to send troops armed with lethal weapons into a city that he views as politically hostile territory and should be taken extremely seriously. Justifying violent repression of whole neighborhoods and sections of people viewed as “the enemy” is a classic fascist tactic to consolidate power and frighten people into submission.
