In language and tone that channeled slaveowners in the plantation days, Donald Trump lashed out over and over last week at NFL players who have taken a knee during the national anthem.
In response, over the weekend of September 24, there was a beautiful show of defiance by dozens of athletes who refused to participate in the forced patriotism and flag worship that this regime uses to whip their white supremacist, fascist base into a frenzy.
Refuse Fascism Blocks LA Freeway, Taking a Knee:
NOV 4 IT BEGINS
Journalist Shaun King tracked many of the major protests via social media, posting pictures of football players from the major NFL teams, sometimes the entire team, sitting or kneeling during the anthem. The protest and messages of solidarity spread to other sports, amateur and professional, as well as to other areas of culture and entertainment and among individuals who posted selfies with #takeaknee, the top trending hashtag on Twitter by Saturday afternoon. An ESPN headline announced, “NFL players, coaches, owners lock arms, kneel during national anthem.”
Trump’s attacks on the NFL players were mainly to galvanize his fascist base, which he has done at one Nuremberg-style rally after another since he took office. But it was also meant to intimidate, bully, and threaten those who don’t bow their heads and know their place and cower to white supremacy, which this regime is hell-bent on reasserting throughout society.
In the face of that, the massive show of defiance was inspiring and righteous, demonstrating to the whole world the only way to respond when fascists attempt to set their terms. When they try to shut down dissent, the dissent must grow, becoming even more determined and more defiant.
The spirit of #takeaknee is the spirit we need for November 4th, when we begin to take to the streets and demand once and for all that Trump and Pence and this whole fascist regime must go. If you have taken a knee, or felt inspired by the courage shown by these athletes, then let’s build toward November 4th together and really end this nightmare.
