Today the Supreme Court decided not to hear Trump’s appeal to stop a lower court from temporarily blocking Trump’s ending of DACA. Instead they decided to wait for the Appellate Court to hear the case.
What does this mean?
First, we have to confront that we are dealing with a fascist regime. Dissent, rule of law and truth are under seige. Immigrants, Muslims, and others who don’t fit into “Make America white Again” are targeted and demonized. There is a direction here, moving to essentially eliminate traditional democratic rights. Within this, anti-immigrant, xenophobic nationalism has been the battering ram and lynchpin of the Trump/Pence Regime.
So, in that light, what does it mean that the U.S. Supreme Court declined, for now, to not overturn federal district court rulings that put part of Trump’s attack on DACA on hold (DACA recipients can, for now, renew their status, but the one-million plus people eligible for but not enrolled in DACA cannot apply)? Trump was furious that two federal judges issued those rulings. He demanded the Supreme Court step in and immediately shutdown DACA. The Supreme Court declined to do that for now. But Trump is bragging, with good reason, that the Supreme Court will back him up when the case reaches them through normal channels.
The federal court rulings are a product of real divisions in the halls of power over the direction of society. Those cracks in the wall could be widened by mass resistance. But the only way anything good will come from that is people taking mass determined non-violent VISIBLE action. That could create a situation where those in power would be forced to respond to our demands that this nightmare must end, and the whole regime must go in the interests of the humanity.
Now is the time for everyone to come to the defense of those first and most viciously under attack and strengthen the movement to drive the fascist Trump/Pence regime from power. Take up the call from Refuse Fascism for March 1, and bring the message into and strengthen all the protests against attacks on immigrants including on March 5: Wear Black – Immigrants Stay/ Trump and Pence Must Go! Take action at school, work and in the streets.
