CBS News reported that Republican Senators received a warning from the Trump regime: “Vote against the president and your head will be on a pike.” Adam Schiff used this quote in his closing arguments and caused an uproar from Republican Senators denying this allegation.
We may not know whether these exact words were used or where they came from, but one thing is undeniable: if you are relying on Republican Senators to grow a spine or a conscience and vote against the president that has done more than anyone to marshal in the white supremacy, xenophobia, Christian fascism, and America first brute power they want to cement into place—without the people in our millions having to lift a finger to change this dynamic—you need to wake up now.
First off, it’s not hard to believe that a gangster regime that has attempted to sabotage an election, assassinated a top government official of a sovereign country inside another sovereign country, or refused to allow immigrants being held in concentration camps to get flu vaccinations, would resort to threats against their own party members to demand absolute loyalty. Would a president with an itchy twitter finger that regularly threatens the press, opposition, and other countries dare demand a vote in his favor from his senators? It’s worth reading a New York Times article from last month, “Fear and Loyalty: How Donald Trump Took Over the Republican Party,” which recounts some of the ways the GOP has been hollowed out, with more moderate voices either falling in line or falling out of the party – by retiring, refusing to seek re-election, or losing an election to a more loyal Trumpist. Right now, even with the Christian fascist Mike Pence waiting in the wings, the Republican Party is Trump’s Fascist Party.
This is the party that has a majority in the Senate and will vote for Trump’s acquittal unless the people get in the streets, this week in D.C. and nationwide, disrupting business as usual and refusing to accept the fascist stonewalling of the impeachment process. If Trump is acquitted, imagine the vengeance, the vindication, and the entitlement to go forward with a program that puts the entire planet and all of humanity in its crosshairs.
Republican senators are the last people in the world we should be counting on to save us. It’s on us. Get in the streets and demand TrumpPence #OUTNOW!
January 26: Come to mass meetings to wrestle with and make plans for how to put #OUTNOW on the map on a whole new level, and organize big protests the night before the Senate votes on hearing essential witnesses in Trump’s impeachment trial.
