We extend an invitation to all to work with us to find creative ways to show our collective opposition to Trump’s rampaging fascist mobs who will descend on DC on January 6 in an attempt to overturn Biden’s decisive victory over Trump.
Joe Biden won the 2020 election by some 7 million popular votes and 74 electoral college votes. Biden’s victory was overwhelming and legitimate! Trump lost and needs to get the hell out!
Yet, Donald Trump is still working aggressively to overturn the election through lies, through baseless and failing legal challenges, and through whipping up his fascist supporters to terrorize those who oppose him.
On January 6, the day when Congress is set to meet and officially certify Job Biden as the winner, Trump is urging his rabid supporters to converge on Washington, DC and urging Republicans to disrupt this certification in Congress. Last time Trump’s MAGA supporters rampaged through DC, they savagely assaulted counter-protesters and bystanders and targeted Black churches with white supremacist vandalism. This time, Trump himself is stoking the flames of reactionary rage even higher, promising the rally will “be wild.”
It is a profound problem that must be confronted and transformed that the “decent people” of this country who voted against Trump have, since the election, ceded the political initiative and the public squares to fascist marauders.
The fascism that Trump has spearheaded and which is now metastasizing into massive mob violence and conspiracy-driven rejection of a legitimate election is not going to go away on its own. Ignored, it will only grow worse.
In DC and nationwide: We urge you to work with us to overcome fear and uncertainty by working to find creative ways to manifest your opposition to the fascists and their attempts to overturn the election on January 6. Below is a letter with some ideas. Use them or come up with your own, and write to us with your plans.
We urge you also to write with us with your thoughts and questions about how we can, together, transform this situation in an ongoing way.
Write to us here: [email protected]
And below is a letter that you can use to write to friends and others to open up the same conversation and process where you are.
Greetings,
I am writing to ask if we can talk on the phone sometime before the end of the year to discuss a difficult problem we all face and what to do about it. Continuing his unhinged attempts to overturn the election results, Trump is calling his rabid supporters back to DC on January 6 to oppose Congress’s formal certification of Biden as the next president. He has promised them a “wild” rally where he can whip up fascist vitriol against his political enemies and unleash their white supremacist violence in the streets.
Yet the millions who poured their hearts into voting for Biden have been largely passive in the face of this. It does not look likely right now that people will come out for non-violent mass action to oppose Trump and his fascist forces on January 6, but ignoring it and ceding the public square and public discourse to their hate and bigotry is unconscionable and paves the way for worse in the future.
I’d really like to talk to you about how you are seeing this situation and how we can work on turning it around. What would be forms that could give people a way to act together to send a message of refusal to the world, while breaking down the isolation they feel? Is there a creative, visual way that people can express their anger and opposition? Perhaps a symbol people can put in their windows or post around the city? Perhaps a time when people open their windows, go out on their porches and front stoops, and make noise – with a joyous and raucous song or banging of pots and pans?
I’d also like to learn more broadly how you are seeing this situation and how we might continue to learn from each other and work together in the days going forward.
Sincerely,
