Democratic strategist Don Calloway made a compelling case against the “energetic” argument of former RNC chair Michael Steele that Biden and congressional Democrats have the authority to enforce the subpoenas that Bannon and other January 6th organizers are defying on Trump’s orders. “You’re absolutely right, they have the authority, but you act as though we don’t understand that there are political realities, and [Biden] has to protect his house majorities as well as become re-elected himself…”
Watch the whole exchange here:
For those who might be a little confused about why a Democratic president and a Democratic majority in the House and Senate can’t stand up to the LOSER Trump and his minions, I thought I’d offer a little primer on the political realities of which Don Calloway speaks.
Political “Reality” #1
If organizers of the January 6 attempted coup refuse to play by the rules and honor congressional subpoenas, that’s not OUR problem, that’s the GOP’s problem. The January 6 committee, the Black Congressional Caucus, and even Biden himself can’t fix this problem for them. That would just be enabling.
Political “Reality” #2
White moderates are going to keep us in power so we can defeat Trump in 2024, and 2028, and so on and so on. White moderates do not want Steve Bannon dragged into a congressional hearing! White moderates do not want chaos and violence and angry white mobs at their doorsteps! So everyone just calm the f*** down.
Political “Reality” #3
Obviously we can’t hold the leaders of a violent coup attempt criminally accountable if we ever want to win another election that Republicans won’t try to overturn, or will try to but won’t succeed because no one ever learns anything from a failed coup attempt, and don’t worry about all the voter suppression and mechanisms to de-certify election results and vigilante harassment of Black voters because we are going to VOTE THEM OUT, HELL YEAH!
Political “Reality” #4
There ain’t no United States without the former states of the Confederacy, you know what I’m sayin? It’s almost, like, our patriotic duty to not stop white supremacists from storming the Capitol.
I hope this primer has been helpful in explaining the political realities faced by the Democratic Party. I hope it helps us put to rest any hope or delusion that the Democrats will lock Trump up or at least stop him from running for president again. I mean, they’re practically begging you to stop relying on them.
Maybe we should listen, because here’s the biggest political reality: Trumpism – a 21st century fascism hellbent on revenge, violence, and the gutting of the rule of law – is far from over, and no one is going to stop them but millions of people who refuse to lie down and accept it. A mass movement against fascism, even through four years of a fascist regime in the White House and all of the crimes we’ve witnessed, has yet to emerge, and the time that Biden’s victory bought us to organize real, undeniable, overwhelming opposition that could actually drive this fascism out of government and society is running out.
