In an important opinion piece in the New York Times (12/31/18), writer Katherine Stewart shines a sobering and revealing spotlight on the forces and the outlook behind Christian evangelical cohesion around Donald Trump.
She quotes an influential evangelical who declared “I believe the 45th president is meant to be an Isaiah 45 Cyrus,” who will “restore the crumbling walls that separate us from cultural collapse.” He is invoking the passage Isaiah 45 in the Bible which tells the story of Cyrus, an ancient king of Persia, a non-believer supposedly put in place and guided by God to restore ancient Israel to greatness by triumphing over and enslaving enemies.
Stewart’s piece is important reading for anyone serious about confronting the nightmare this regime means to humanity and a key element of the hard core of what we are up against. And for that matter, anyone who wants to understand how a puritanical religious fundamentalist movement is the most hard-core base for a Donald Trump.
Katherine Stewart concludes:
This isn’t the religious right we thought we knew. The Christian nationalist movement today is authoritarian, paranoid and patriarchal at its core. They aren’t fighting a culture war. They’re making a direct attack on democracy itself.
They want it all. And in Mr. Trump, they have found a man who does not merely serve their cause, but also satisfies their craving for a certain kind of political leadership.

Also highly recommended for critical insights on the role of Christian fascists in the Trump/Pence Regime, and the implications of that “unholy alliance,” these video clips:
Both of the clips (above) are from a talk 2017 talk by Bob Avakian, THE TRUMP/PENCE REGIME MUST GO! In The Name of Humanity, We REFUSE To Accept a Fascist America: A Better World IS Possible!Trump/Pence Regime Must Go!
All this underscores that any notion that Trump’s base of support will somehow turn on him on its own… or that the regime as a whole is not serious about radically and permanently remaking this society in a fascist way is a deadly illusion.
And it underscores the profound truth that only Refuse Fascism has consistently recognized and fought for — the Trump/Pence regime is a fascist regime that must be driven from power through the mass, sustained, actions of the masses of people stepping outside the killing confines of politics-as-usual.
