On February 26, Steve Mnuchin, the Trump/Pence Regime’s Secretary of Treasury spoke at UCLA, channelling the infamous French monarch Marie Antoinette (who, when told the French peasants were starving and had no bread proclaimed “let them eat cake”).
But courageously jumping up in the audience one after the other, Refuse Fascism and Revolution Club members called out Mnuchin and the regime he serves: For “punishing Black and Brown people and [being] responsible for the misery this system has put people in.” For being part of “a regime that is hell-bent on consolidating fascism.” They exposed Trump’s tax “reform” as “targeting people who are most vulnerable.” For “the politics of cruelty… the politics of fascism… attacking people who are in poverty, taking away health care, taking away social security programs…” “People won’t have anything to eat!”
“Where is this money to go?” they asked— “to the military, to create more nuclear weapons, to bomb more people around the world.” And they challenged people: “Don’t go along” with this, “don’t be people who normalize or be a part of this.”

Three protesters, all women, were set upon by UCLA police who either carried or dragged them out of the auditorium. Mnuchin, like a ghoul exposed and cringing in the sunlight, tried to ban distribution of video of the event but too late – hundreds of thousands of people have seen video of what happened.

Thinking that you can wait out fascism or elect Democrats – who conciliate and capitulate to the fascists over and over – is not just folly but paves the road to real horror.
