Self-Organizing, Buddy Groups, and Care Squads

On November 5, people from many different parts of the country, from different backgrounds and diverse political perspectives will gather in the National Mall for a truly historic NONVIOLENT BUT DETERMINED mobilization to demand the removal of the Trump fascist regime, kicking off unrelenting nonviolent mass resistance that refuses to be provoked and refuses to back down until our demand is met.

HUMANITY NEEDS THIS TO BE THE LARGEST NONVIOLENT MASS MOBILIZATION IN US HISTORY. All decent people are welcome and needed to make this a mass outpouring that cannot be ignored.

That means a million people nonviolently flooding the streets of DC. It means thousands of people coming who are not part of any organization. It means thousands of people who self-organized to get to DC through their amateur sports teams, their local Indivisible chapters, their student groups, their religious congregations, and so on. It means thousands who come alone and don’t know anyone – but they know in their hearts that this is humanity’s only hope for stopping a lunatic fascist tyrant from destroying the future. Let the whole world see our determination and hear our demand: Trump Must Go Now!

Rally and march organizers will work hard to marshal and orient the people to practice nonviolence and de-escalation, to look out for each other, and to stay strong no matter how the regime or their supporters respond. In sharp contrast to the cruelty and violence of the MAGA fascists, the world will see our unity, diversity, and love for humanity.

No single organization can track so many people, and while there are no guarantees of safety, there is a lot we can do to protect each other. Here are three ways to prepare:

  1. Form a “care squad” with people you know and trust. Get together and discuss the responsibilities of the care squad and how you will stay in touch and stick together. Make some emergency and contingency plans. Travel to and from the actions, lodge together or near each other, eat together, have each other’s emergency contact information and medical or other issues. It could mean occasionally doing roll calls to ensure that everyone in the group is accounted for, and setting up a Signal group chat where everyone in the squad can keep tabs on each other. You can assign “roles” within the group before you go … maybe one of you has first-aid training, or maybe one of you has had de-escalation training. Stick together and stay alert to your surroundings at all times.

2. Use the buddy system! Even if you are not coming with a group of people, two people can become buddies and do a lot of the same things as the care squads. Through the course of mass struggles like this, people get to know each other. Sometimes strong, lifelong friendships form. If you are in need of a buddy, let someone know. Over the course of the continuous nonviolent protests starting November 5, we recommend that people do not travel to or leave protests on their own. Again, stick together and stay alert to your surroundings at all times.

3. Sign up here to come to DC, so that you can get regular communications from RefuseFascism.org and be in touch with organizers. Consider joining a volunteer crew to help with logistics, medical or legal needs, clean-up, or other needs

IN THE NAME OF HUMANITY, WE REFUSE TO ACCEPT A FASCIST AMERICA!

NOW IS the TIME WHEN WE MUST RISE UP and ACT to STOP the CONSOLIDATION of TRUMP MAGA FASCISM. For the lives of people here and around the world we must refuse unlawful and inhumane orders… we must fill the streets and town squares in non-violent protest—not stopping until we become millions — not relenting until this regime is no longer able to implement its program or maintain its hold on power.
