A group of activists gathered midday Wednesday across the Chicago River from Trump Tower to denounce the recent killing of an Iranian general by the United States in Iraq and call for the removal of President Donald Trump from office.
“There is now a danger of Trump escalating this, escalating the war and the suffering of people in not only Iran but throughout the region and starting a war that can spiral in unpredictable directions,” said Lou Downey, a member of Refuse Fascism, an activist group formed to call for Trump’s removal.
Carrying signs that read “No war on Iran!” roughly a dozen demonstrators gathered on the northeast corner of Wacker Drive and Wabash Avenue to voice their displeasure with America’s attack on Iran and to invite people to join them in protest at 5:30 p.m. in front of Trump Tower and announce a protest 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Thompson Center in the Loop.
Lucha Bright, a Chicago activist, called the killing of Soleimani an “act of war.”
“The biggest and most dangerous power in the world is destroying the lives of people all over the world,” she said. “And people in this country are turning their faces aside from it and letting it happen.”
