Here’s how Trump/Pence gets away with a LOT of its shit in a nutshell.

Regime: We’re absolutely not doing this bad thing (e.g., family separations). Or, at least, if we were, we’ve stopped.

Media: The regime denies doing the bad thing. Or anyway, they’ve stopped doing the bad thing.

Bad takes, right-wing flavor: See! Liberal hysteria! Trump Derangement Syndrome! Witch hunt! Obama did it too!

Bad takes, left-wing flavor: Such a distraction! These guys are just idiots anyway! They probably didn’t MEAN to commit a crime against humanity! Eyes on the 2020 prize! “Issues Americans really care about!” Also, Both Sides!

Media, very quietly: …Actually, it turns out they were lying and they’re still totally doing the bad thing they said they weren’t (e.g., family separations).
