Last year, when news first broke about the tent cities for migrants and the cruel family separations happening at the border, what if people had taken to the streets all summer to drive out the Trump/Pence regime instead of putting all their hope into a blue wave that has done nothing to stop the terrorizing of immigrants? Maybe six immigrant children would still be alive. We must never tell ourselves that it’s only six children … that six children don’t matter. These children had families who loved them. They had precious lives that we allowed to slip away. By waiting and passing off our responsibility to proxies in the Democratic Party, we failed them, and we cannot, must not, keep failing.
On front after front – banning abortion, destroying the environment, attacking LGBTQ rights, promoting overt white supremacy, threats by a demented bully with his finger on the nuclear button to “totally destroy” whole countries… the Trump/Pence regime is radically remaking society – step by step hammering into place a vicious American fascism. This is not insult or exaggeration, it is what they are doing. Therefore, nothing short of removing this whole illegitimate regime from power will stop this nightmare.
People are demanding impeachment because they sense, correctly, that waiting for and banking on the 2020 elections is criminally insane. But impeachment cannot become another means by which the millions who hate what is happening become sucked into another waiting game as the Trump/Pence regime terrorizes more people. While people are arguing for impeachment, the decisive factor is whether or not a critical mass takes to the streets to stop this regime and refuses to leave until this fascist regime is forced out. Only this will shake millions awake, with many losing their adjustment to life under this regime. Only this will undermine the international credibility of the regime. Only this, a determined struggle that doesn’t yield and won’t be provoked, can create the kind of political crisis that could lead those in power who are themselves now under attack by the regime but conciliating with it to respond to our struggle from below. Only this can lead to a situation where this illegitimate regime is removed from power.
