It almost broke the internet. Pelosi and Schumer sparring with Trump for 15 minutes in front of live cameras. We’ve almost never seen anything like this.
But, don’t get taken in by the bluster and hype.
Sure, sparks flew – but WHAT EXACTLY was the “DEBATE?”
It was not over whether to continue to demonize, terrorize, and destroy the lives of immigrants and asylum-seekers. It was over how to best clamp down on immigrants while keeping the government running smoothly.
On one side there was Trump. He bragged about stranding desperate asylum-seekers in squalid and dangerous situations along the U.S./Mexico border. He claimed that terrorists, drugs, and epidemic diseases are flooding across the border. He insisted on getting his fascist border wall or else he’ll shut down the government.
And then there were Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer who never uttered a single mumbling word in defense of immigrants or asylum-seekers. Not. A. Word.
Nothing about the tear-gas fired on children and others at the border.
Nothing about the nearly 14,000 immigrant children currently locked in camps.
Nothing about the 170 immigrants arrested by ICE for attempting to sponsor these children.
Instead, Pelosi and Schumer insisted – over and over and over again – that they agree with Trump on “border security.” They agree with further militarizing the border. They agree with further clamping down on immigrants. In fact, they’ve already agreed to give $1.3 billion for the Wall.
These Democrats are NOT taking on Trump and Pence’s fascism. They are conciliating with it. They are normalizing it. They are nit-picking over how far and how fast to implement it.
Our interests – and the interests of humanity – lie in STOPPING this vicious assault on immigrants and STOPPING the whole fascist remaking of America this is part of.
