Rudy Giuliani, Trump’s lawyer said that Trump could shoot Comey and not be indicted. “If he shot James Comey, he’d be impeached the next day. I don’t know how you can indict while he’s in office. No matter what it is,” he said.
These are the words of a fascist regime, declaring themselves above any constraint of the law. And – once again –issuing slightly veiled threats against anyone who would challenge them, even those within the ranks of the government.
Giuliani’s statement is not new. Trump invoked the possibility of assassinating Hillary Clinton if she won the election. He said “If she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do, folks, Although the Second Amendment people — maybe there is, I don’t know.”
Legal scholars are right to point out that what Trump is doing is in clear violation of the rule of law, the separation of powers, and well established norms.
But anyone who thinks that identifying the violations will be enough to stop them – in the face of a regime with disdain for these very norms and laws…who is rapidly remaking the courts, refashioning the enforcement agencies of the nation – is not confronting the seriousness of the fascism now baring its ugly fangs even more openly.
The only real check on a fascist regime which declares itself above the law and acts with ruthless gangsterism is the MASSES OF PEOPLE.
The people who do not want to see this regime impose its fascist order; its genocidal ripping apart of immigrant families; dismantling environmental protections; violent racism; heartless theocratic assault on women and LGBTQ people and its completely shutting down of anyone’s ability to challenge their power – need to get organized NOW to get in position to drive them from power.
Imagine tens of thousands of us, beginning in several cities and towns with marches candelight vigils, rallies – students, religious communities, immigrants, everyone with a heart for humanity in the streets and not back down – growing from thousands to hundreds of thousands and eventually millions. Those in power who are now under attack by the regime but conciliating with it would be compelled to respond to our struggle from below. All of this realizing the demand: Trump/Pence Must Go!
Modern history has given us numerous examples of how massive, sustained, non-violent street protests can force an oppressive regime out of power.
